âYou like her, am I right?â Annabel said, sneaking up on Alice as she settled into one of the large leather sofas in the sitting room. James had disappeared to read bedtime stories to the children, and Caroline had returned to her solitude at Buckingham Palace. âAll this âSara or otherwiseââ¦you really do like her.â
âSay what?â Alice stalled by taking a sip of her brandy. She used to loathe the stuff, but had built up a tolerance having been offered it after dinner so often. Now the sharp and smoky taste was a comfort on her tongue.
âSara. This may have been a favour to us, but somewhere along the line you ended up smitten, I think. I can see it whenever we talk about her.â
âJust the novelty of someone out of the ordinary.â Alice refused to make eye contact, knowing she would give herself away. âHow often do we get to know anyone beyond a handshake and some small talk, really?â
âEven so. A few dinners in London would have kept the press happy, but you went all out. Spending time with Libby, that impressive little flying date. You were rather bringing your A game, and now that you can walk away⦠I suspect you donât quite want to.â
âDonât you have anything better to do than speculate about my love life? Besides, you heard Mummy. Sheâs scouring the peerage for a forgotten lesbian daughter somewhere. The token queers of the aristocracy are about to be foisted on me like piano lessons were, and probably with just as much success.â
âDoes Sara know you might be interested?â
Alice felt her cheeks flush. Damn.
Annabel cackled on noticing. âWell, that answers that question. Has anything happened between the two of you?â
âPerhaps. Nothing significant. But all it led to was a conversation about how she has no intention of being in the public eye, which the fucking paparazzi followed up perfectly by deciding to stalk her this week.â
âHave you tried calling in a favour? Warning them off?â
âAs much as humanly possible, yes. But you know theyâre a law unto themselves. They always make just enough money for the risk to be worth it, even more so if the decent ones have been scared away.â
Annabel took Aliceâs glass and topped up both of their drinks from the decanter on the table. âAnd have you thought about convincing her?â
âWhat do you mean?â Of course, Alice had thought about convincing Sara. It was all she could think of. She leaned forward, waiting for Annabel to arrange herself cross-legged on the other end of the sofa. With her hair pinned up and make-up faded after a long day, the princess looked quite like a regular mother-of-two relaxing before bedtime.
âYou cannot imagine how reluctant I was to join this circus when James started chatting me up. I was quite content to be the university girlfriend that was kept on the hush-hush, fully expecting him to ditch me as soon as we graduated, and he had the world at his feet.â
âStill took him long enough to get serious about it all, though.
